During the holiday season, it is easy to get caught up in the bustle of activities around us and neglect many of the daily disciplines we cultivate the rest of the year. One of these disciplines is our time with God. How sad that many of us are so busy preparing to celebrate His coming that we forget to spend time with Him. Although our usual routine is disrupted right now, there are ways we can still connect with God.
Many of you subscribe to a daily word or verse. Instead of just reading it and moving on, take 5 minutes and see that scripture through new eyes. Ask God for fresh revelation about it’s personal meaning to you and how it applies to your life in this season.
There are many Advent devotions available both online and in print. When my daughter was growing up, we picked one and then spent a few minutes each night reading it as a family and praying together. It was a great way to re-focus after a busy day.
I know that some people get tired of hearing Christmas music, but have you ever listened to the words of some of the traditional carols? We sing them so quickly that we forget they are a testament to the goodness of our God and His love for us. Take the time to really hear the words and let them touch your heart anew.
Remember that no matter how busy and stressful this time of year can be, the whole reason for it is God’s love for us. The distractions you are dealing with right now cannot change that. So, if you miss your usual time with Him, don’t beat yourself up about it.
Find other ways to connect with Him for now and He will meet you there.
