Let’s begin by taking a look at the role of Government in the society of a nation. And let’s start with the famous words of one of the founding fathers of the United States of America, Thomas Jefferson, in The Declaration of Independence:


“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. ─ That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

Next, let’s look at the picture of government pictured with the prophetic word about Jesus from the book of Isaiah 9:6-7 (NASB):

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest upon His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighy God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.

And lastly, we’ll take a look at what Jesus himself said about the issue of authority in Matthew 28:18-20 (NLT):

Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Now, I’d like to take a closer look at the issue of authority and government, for without authority, there is no power to govern. In The Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson wrote that the authority to govern is vested in the government by the people who are governed. This is why we elect our government officials in the USA. This is true of many other nations. So the people give their authority to the governing authorities so that they may have some level of peace in the nation. Presumably, these governing officials act based upon the laws of the nation. In this way, everyone knows what is expected and the judgments that are made are not arbitrary.


The word government, according to Dictionary.com means:

1. the political direction and control exercised over the actions of the members, citizens, or inhabitants of communities, societies, and states; direction of the affairs of a state, community, etc.; political administration:

Government is necessary to the existence of civilized society.

2. the form or system of rule by which a state, community, etc., is governed:

monarchical government; episcopal government.

3. the governing body of persons in a state, community, etc.; administration.

4. a branch or service of the supreme authority of a state or nation, taken as representing the whole:

a dam built by the government.

5. (in some parliamentary systems, as that of the United Kingdom)

a. the particular group of persons forming the cabinet at any given time:

The prime minister has formed a new government.

b. the parliament along with the cabinet:

The government has fallen.

6. direction; control; management; rule:

the government of one’s conduct.

7. a district governed; province.

8. political science.

9. Grammar. The [established] usage that requires that one word in a sentence should cause another to be of a particular form:

the government of the verb by its subject.

The word authority, according to Dictionary.com means:

1. the power to determine, adjudicate, or otherwise settle disputes; jurisdiction; the right to control, command, or determine.

2. a power or right delegated or given; authorization: Who has the authority to grant permission?

3. a person or body of persons in whom authority is vested, as a governmental agency: The housing authority provides rental assistance payments to low-income residents. The bridges and piers are built and maintained by the Port Authority.

It may have been some time since you visited the actual definitions of these words. Hopefully, looking at them again within the context of the passages quoted above, you are beginning to get a picture of the breadth of government and the necessity to establish the line of authority for such government. You see that Thomas Jefferson acknowledged the line of authority for our national government coming from two sources: First, from God our Creator, and second from the people. A government that acknowledges God as its first and primary source of authority gives the people reason to rejoice. When the government denies that authority comes from God, the people rue the day they put them in office.

We see this in scripture in Proverbs 29:2 (KJV):

“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.”

Going back to Jesus’ words about authority, we know that he took the authority that God gave him and he entrusted that same authority to his disciples, encouraging them to use that authority to spread the Kingdom. Why? So that the people could rejoice that they were under the authority of God, despite whatever authority they might find themselves under in the natural world. Yet, in time to come, Jesus will also rule here on earth (Isaiah 9:6-7). So what are we to do in the meantime? How are we to participate in ruling through the authority that we have been given by Jesus?


Based on the fact that Jesus gave us the same authority he had been given, I believe if the church does not exercise her authority in the earth, our nations will be hard pressed to function in the level of authority and righteousness that God desires. You see, Jesus was given ALL authority. And through Jesus we have been given ALL authority. So what does that leave? If we are holding ALL authority, then the only authority left is … ? We have been given the power to grant authority, the authority we have been given. We can choose to give it away through abdication, which is essentially what happened at The Fall in the Garden of Eden. Through disobedience, Adam and Eve “gave away” the keys, a symbol of the authority given them in the earth. Through obedience, Jesus took the keys back. The authority had always been His. He never gave it up. Instead, He extended His authority through us.

So then … if we hold ALL authority, then we have the power through our prayers to change our nations for Christ and His Kingdom. Yes, we still need to do practical things such as vote. Yes, we still need to share the Good News with others. Yes, we still need to pray for God’s Kingdom to come to earth. Are you starting to get a picture of how you might use the authority you have been given?

As we, the church and the body of Jesus Christ, move in the place of prayer to exercise our authority in the realm of our national government, we will see significant changes take place. Realize that without our help, our natural government is powerless to produce an environment that creates a welcome seedbed for the Gospel. When the people in government are behaving in ways which are righteous, that creates an environment where it is easy to share the Good News of Jesus. As this occurs, as more and more people receive the word of God’s love and provision, the atmosphere in our nation will change. So hopefully, you see and are beginning to understand the importance of each of us taking our places on the government mountain, wielding our authority for the good of our government and our nation.
